I’m not particularly against using social media. To be honest, I use WhatsApp, Twitter, and LinkedIn daily. Plus, I’m a blogger:) But I can proudly say that I use my time wisely with the various social media apps that I use. In the end, time management is very important for me because time lost cannot be gained. Time is one of the rarest items that money cannot restitute.
So below are the humble tricks I use to limit the time I dedicate to being social online.
- I turn off the notifications: This mainly applies to WhatsApp. I can say that I found great relief as soon as I turned silenced the notifications on this app. The unwelcomed vibrations of the phone would make me anxious. I allow myself to check WhatsApp during certain hours such as lunch break. Believe me, you do not have to know what everyone says in the group chats every second.
- I keep myself signed out: This is another simple trick I use on Twitter, LinkedIn, and WordPress. I have to make an effort to type in my email address as well as my password every time I want to sign in. This trick is especially useful when I’m in a lazy mood:)
- I follow public accounts: I used to have Instagram back in the day, but then I gradually got bored of it. I still check up on some inspiring figures who have Instagram accounts. And luckily, I do not have to create an account to see their profiles because the celebrities I’m interested in all have public profiles. And Instagram limits the number of photos I can view on their profiles to two or three posts at a time. Well, that saves me a lot of time:)
- I do not download new social media apps: I hear there are many more social media apps out there such as SnapChat, TikTok, ClubHouse etc. A lot of people urged me to join these platforms and I kindly refused each invitation.
I agree that some social media apps are really helpful because they allow us to stay in touch with people from all over the world. I have a lot of friends who live in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. The only way I can keep in touch with them is via social media. But at the same time, I’m aware of the addictive part of social media, and I try to distance myself from that side as much as possible. As I said before, time is very important for me, and I’d like to be able to control how much time I want to dedicate to social apps, not the other way around.
