In times of pandemic, food may be one of the only things we may be spending our money on. I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember the last time I spent money on clothing:) I do remember though how much I spent on the takeaway dinner yesterday evening:)
I’m not against at all ordering takeaway food. It’s a good idea to add some variety every now and then by trying out recipes that I would not usually cook at home. But I guess we all know that cooking more at home is healthier for your body, for your mind, and for your wallet as well:) So, below are a few humble suggestions on how you can save money on food:
- Cook at home: Yeap! Even though this is as obvious as sunlight, I need to mention it here too. Stay home, save lives and cook food:)
- Try meal delivery companies: We’ve tried HelloFresh for a while as a couple. It’s a great help in preventing food waste too because they deliver only the number of fresh ingredients that you need to use. And this option is not very expensive if you consider the fact that everything, including the recipe cards, gets delivered to your door. I sometimes wished they delivered a chef too, so I would not have to cook 🙂 😛
- Keep staples in stock: Buying main items such as rice, sugar, flour, and legumes is usually cheaper.
- Cook extra portions: When I used to go to the office, I would cook a little extra on the evening before and took the leftovers to work as lunch. This practice helped me save lunch money and enjoy my lunches outdoors without wasting time on where to get my lunch for the day.
- Spend time on planning meals: Making regular inventory check and grocery lists may help you feel in control when you go grocery shopping. Hopefully, it will prevent impulse buying as well!
- Avoid doing shopping when you’re hungry: Don’t fall into the trap! 🙂
- Pay attention to consumer tricks: I’ve read some stories a couple of times that supermarkets place more expensive items at eye level, and they place cheaper items on lower or upper shelves. Similarly, supermarkets put fresh food nearer to the entrance. Once you buy the healthy stuff and make your way to the checkout, you may be tempted to reward yourself with expensive snacks that are placed on the way out.
