Some Magic Numbers You Can Use to Add Magic to Your Life

Happiness is only a few numbers away!

Numbers are all around us. And interestingly, if we do certain things at least a certain number of times, not less, we can feel their uplifting psychological effects on us immediately. Below are a few of those things I’ve read and noticed over the years. And I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more that I still am not aware of:)

  1. Writing down at least three things you are grateful for: I’m sure you’ve heard of this one from a variety of sources recently. Until recent times, gratitude used to be something people tended to feel when they survived a catastrophic event. For example, it’s very normal for anyone to feel a great sense of gratitude after surviving a car crash, a fire, an earthquake etc. But now, science tells us that feeling grateful every day for even the smallest joys in our daily lives can improve our lives dramatically. And three is the magical number of times we need to practice gratitude every day.
  2. Hugging someone for at least 20 seconds: Now, I know this is something difficult to practice especially if you are living on your own during a pandemic. But if you are blessed to be living with family members or romantic partners, please hug the people around you for at least 20 seconds. Some even suggest practicing hugging at least eight times a day. Share the love!
  3. Performing five acts of kindness: According to research in Great Britain, practicing daily acts of kindness has a similar happiness effect on us as doing novel things. Another research by Sonja Lyubomirsky shows that people who perform five acts of kindness increase their happiness levels.
  4. Maintaining 3:1 and 5:1 positivity ratio: Some say that you need to experience at least three positive events to cancel out the psychological burden of a single negative event that happens in your daily life. And according to research, this ratio needs to be 5:1 for couples in a romantic relationship. Now you know how to brighten your or someone else’s mood when needed šŸ™‚
  5. Saying “I love you, I’m proud of you, you are doing a great job”: In my opinion, these are the phrases we should be telling our partners, parents, siblings, kids as well as ourselves daily as many times as possible. Don’t put a limit on the number of times you would like to say these phrases:) The more the better šŸ™‚

There you go…Some simple tricks you can practice every day to increase your as well as other’s happiness levels every day. Which one of these suggestions will you start applying more in your daily life moving forward? Do you know any other magic number of items you can add to the above list?
