Coopers Hill: Where People Race Down After a Block of Cheese

I watched the trailer of a mini-series, called We Are The Champions, on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it already, please take a look. The mini-series talk about the strangest competitions around the world. And the first competition displayed is a competition called Cheese Rolling. Basically, you see a bunch of people running after a block of cheese that’s left to free fall from a hill with 45 degrees of inclination.

Well, of course, I was very surprised to find out that such a competition exists. And I would like to express my admiration for all the competitors who have tried the race so far. This is one type of race I can never dare. But what left me flabbergasted was the location of this competition because, apparently, it’s only a thirty-minute drive from where we live in the U.K. We have been living in the U.K. for the past three years, and we never ever heard anyone talk about such a competition or place. Right after I watched it on Netflix, I called one of my British colleagues and asked her if she knew about this place or the competition. She said “No” 🙂

I read on Wikipedia that the race takes place in the spring, and it did not take place in 2020 due to covid, which makes sense. Well, I was not going to wait until spring. I had to visit the famous Cooper Hill in Brockworth right away. I tried to photograph as much as possible, but the ground was very muddy and slippery due to recent weather conditions, so I cannot say the shots are great. Basically, I did not want to become the first person in history to roll down the Coopers Hill in the absence of a block of cheese :P

The initial view of the hill
I assume they trim these bushes before the race, otherwise, the cheese may get stuck!
The start to the top of the hill
Walking this nature reserve is calm and relaxing.
Initial view from the top of the hill. Someone better fix that fence!
This was the closest I could get to the top of the hill.

The navigator did a good job taking us to the hill. If you ever like to visit, be aware that the road leading to the hill is very narrow and it’s one-way. There’s a small area at the bottom of the hill where you can park your car. I think a maximum of four cars can fit into that space.

Coopers Hill’s fame seems to be on the rise. We saw other groups of people inspecting the scene:) I should say, “Thank you, Netflix”, I guess:)
